Feel The Burn!

The final Showtime Saturday installment and final installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is the timeless classic of a man not asked to be born, but forced to live in a world that won't accept him, Frankenstein

"Frankenstein"
The best Halloween film ever made? Quite possibly. Such a timeless story.

With this piece I wanted to show a solemn contemplative "monster" amidst the whirlwind of his short-lived life. I used the yellow lines to indicate his spark of life and the progressive white line to determine his lifeline, from fractured to progressive until he is beset upon disaster with the little girl that he attempts to connect with. I used the red shapes to indicate, not only his fiery demise, but the rough claustrophobic life that he could never "adjust" to. I also threw in the burning windmill over his face for a little foreshadowing and force contemplation of death upon the "monster."

Check out the trailer, and then hunt down the film.

I had a blast doing this series, and I hope you enjoyed it as well.

It was a personal exercise to improve my graphic design skills, stimulate creativity within boundaries, and a daily project to do to keep the depression away.

Spooks, Specters, and Ghosts

The final Double Feature Friday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is two rickety found-footage films featuring spooks, specters, and ghosts, The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity

"The Blair Witch Project"
"Paranormal Activity"

I love found-footage films, and these two are great. The director cut of Paranormal Activity is absolutely fantastic. Jumps, scares, and frights! Oh my!

With this piece I wanted to tone down some of the bright colors, but bring in the red and orange for contrast against the black and white, and the blue on the calendar page to emphasize a ghostly feel. Mwwaaa ha ha ha ha ha!

Check out the trailers, and then hunt down the films.

Zombie Sense Tingling!

Seeing as I missed yesterday's Horror Movie October posting today I have brought you two.

Rejoice for we shall have our cake and swim in it too!

First up we have the last installment of Weird Wednesday from yesterday. It's a tale of finding love while losing everything, Perfect Sense

"Perfect Sense"

Perfect Sense may not be classified as a horror film, but the fall of society as we know it through the loss of our senses one by one is a terrifying thought which is depicted brutally in the film. Eva Green and Ewan McGregor give emotionally powerful and convincing performances as well.

With this piece I attempted to represent our senses through rings of colors with the epicenter being the love interests. Then I "broke and spun" the title to represent the downfall of each of the senses one by one.

Today's last Thursday Abroad installment of Horror Movie October is a zombie romp all the way from Germany, Rammbock: Berlin Undead

"Rammbock: Berlin Undead"

Rammbock, which translated means battering ram, is exactly how this film behaves. An undead assault on all fronts. Oh, and there's a love story in there somewhere. I'm sure you can find it.

With this piece I wanted to explore the intense dread with the title page and the cold desolation with the calendar side.

Check out the trailers then hunt down the films.

Divided We Fall

Today's Two Buck Tuesday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is a tale of isolation that leads to self-discovery and adventure in The Divide

"The Divide"
The Divide is one of the most intense films I've ever seen. The film starts off with asteroids destroying Earth and only gets worse from there. A group of strangers discover their true natures when locked under ground with dwindling resources. Michael Biehn's powerhouse performance is raw and emotionally over-powered, along with everyone else in the film; especially Lauren German, HeroesMilo Ventimiglia, and Michael Eklund.

Brace yourself for The Divide

Check out the trailer, and then hunt down the film.

Take A Look...

Today's Monster Monday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is the earnest tale of the trials and tribulations of life as a single mother in The Babadook

"The Babadook"

As far as monsters go, the Babadook is pretty fantastic. Think of a horror version of the Jabberwocky... ok, so think of the Jabberwocky.

I wanted to capture the beautiful tones and contrast used in this film as tools to simulate isolation and captivity; two themes that run heavily throughout the film.

Check out the trailer, and then hunt down the film.

Dancin' On Fire

I've really been  enjoying making these Horror Movie October calendar cards, but I try to limit myself to a certain amount of time to finish each one. By the time I release one I still have ideas, and will play with it more later on. Sometimes I like what my play has brought out more than the one I released prior. Just like this one!

Here is another alternate, this time for yesterday's Showtime Saturday, Drag Me To Hell

"Drag Me To Hell"

Gettin' Spoopy Up In Here

Today's Sunday Matinee installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is the plasticine parable of paranormal proportions that persuades people to praise each other's peculiarities in ParaNorman

"ParaNorman"
I wanted to use bright colors (as I always like to do) to emphasize the cartoon nature, but also change the tones to create a ghoulish tone.

In addition to being an amazing movie it also has one of my favorite teaser trailers. It beautifully demonstrates the animation, tones, and themes of the film all while featuring the song "Season of the Witch" by Donovan

Check out the trailer and then hunt down the film.

BONUS ZOMBIES!

BONUS!

I have made an alternate of yesterday's Double Feature Friday installment that includes Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland

"Shaun of the Dead"
"Zombieland"
It's not a huge change. I just added Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to the lettering, and then threw in some amusement park zombies on the calendar page. However, I thought I would share.

Let me know your thoughts.

Going Down?

Today's Showtime Saturday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is Sam Raimi's endearing tale of a young woman carrying on the wishes of a dying stranger, Drag Me To Hell

"Drag Me To Hell"
Just when you thought bankers never helped anyone, Christine Brown (played by Alison Lohman) proves that even in our busy, self-absorbed days we can find time to help out our fellow man as they pass to the afterlife.

I attempted to capture the experience of being lapped up by the flames of hell all while showcasing the film's protagonist and antagonist.

Check out the trailer, and then hunt down the film.

Amusement and Zombies

Today's Double Feature Friday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series features the best fun you could ever have with zombies, Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland

"Shaun of the Dead"
"Zombieland"
Seriously, if you like good time and zombies you should just stop what you're doing and watch these right now. Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Zombies, Twinkies, Amusement Parks, Clowns, Queen.... just watch them now!

As far as aesthetics go, I used bright colors to accentuate fun, and a gradient changing color scheme to represent the changing of life into ZOMBIE!

Check out the trailers and then hunt down the films.

Breakfast and Black Rainbows

How is everyone doing? It's been a few days since a post hasn't it?

My apologies for that. I had a couple of rough days. I was rejected from four jobs in two days, and fined with $270 to pay within 30 days or else a warrant will be put out for lil' ol'  me. The unemployment topped with the fine kind of spiraled me into bed for a couple of days.

However, I am back!

I also have two days of previous posts to make up for. So, without further ado here is the 21st's Weird Wednesday and the 22nd's Thursday Abroad, Dead and Breakfast and Beyond the Black Rainbow

"Dead and Breakfast"

"Beyond the Black Rainbow"
Dead and Breakfast is a quirky little film with ho-down song and dance intervals and revolves around zombies in the country. Quite a unique piece.

Speaking of unique, from Canada, Beyond the Black Rainbow, is filled with striking visuals that would make any Kubrick fan squee with delight.

I attempted to keep the Dead and Breakfast piece nice and quirky with a colorful color scheme. As for the Beyond the Black Rainbow piece, I used the general color scheme and stark shapes utilized in the film, and added a bit of color for contrast.

Watch the trailers and then hunt down the films.

Raise The Roof

Today's Two Buck Tuesday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is the found-footage cautionary tale about overdosing on scare houses, The Houses October Built

"The Houses October Built"

This fantastic lo-fi found-footage film from the producers of Insidious and Paranormal Acitivity,  starts harmless enough, but before you know it the characters are popping in and out of random scare rooms throughout their lives. Plus, it includes footage from actual scare houses which is always a delight to see if you can't make it to one.

For this piece I attempted to capture the essence of rickety architecture and vibrant life interspersed throughout the changes colors that accompany fall all laid over imagery from the film.

Check out the trailer, and then hunt down the film.

Trick Or Treat

Today's Monster Monday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is the 2007 Rob Zombie remake of a Halloween classic about a tale of a single mother trying to make ends meet.

"Halloween"
I know many have dissed on Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween, but I quite enjoyed it. I didn't much care for his previous flicks, but he toned down the carnival and kept true to slasher protocol, graphic death scenes. Plus his development with Michael Meyers is beautifully tragic.

With this piece I attempted to capture the fractured psyche of a Lil' Mikey, the blond-haired American boy turned monstrous killer.

Check out the trailer, and then hunt down the film.

Cookie Cutter Custom Nightmare

Today's Sunday Matinee installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is the another fantastic film from Gremlins' Joe Dante, the 1989 Tom Hanks follow-up to The Money Pit, The 'Burbs

"The 'Burbs"
I love all of Joe Dante's films, but The 'Burbs is by far one of my favorites, and one of his most underrated films. Tom Hanks, Corey Feldman, and Bruce Dern shining through as the worst nosy neighbors of surburbia.

In this piece I presented to contrast of the warm veneer that suburbia presents itself with against the drab depressive undertones it can often carry because of its lack of personality. I also used squares to represent housing units that create a claustrophobia.

Check out the trailer. Then hunt down the film.

This Post Is Clean

Today's Showtime Saturday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is the 1982 Steven Spielberg real estate nightmare Poltergeist.

"Poltergeist"
I love everything about this movie. I focused to bring the bright vivid colors of transcendent dreams that lay the road to another realm, and apply them to some striking imagery from the film. It's a technicolor nightmare of unworldly proportions.

Check out the trailer, and then hunt down the film.

We'll Leave A Light On For You

Today's Double Feature Friday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series features one of my favorite directors, Sam Raimi, and one of my favorite producers, Joss Whedon, with the seminal Evil Dead 2 and The Cabin in the Woods, respectively.

"Evil Dead 2"
"The Cabin in the Woods"
This is my kind of horror! Crazy, unpredictable, ludicrous, and in-your-face directing that keeps you jumping and screaming. Bruce Campbell, Thor, chainsaw hands, and mermen. How can you go wrong?

Check out the trailers below. Then hunt down the flicks.

You Can Dance If You Want To

Today's Thursday Abroad installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is Dario Argento's beautiful film about the horrors of studying abroad for dance. That's right I'm talking about the metal infused Suspiria

"Suspiria"
This film will teach you to never pursue arts in Germany. Especially if you're a 14 year old girl interested in ballet. It's a very strict process over there.

Check out the trailer, and then hunt down the film.

Life Finds A Way

Today's Weird Wednesday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series comes straight from the master of transfiguration, David Cronenberg, in his 1986 Kafkaesque vision of the 1957 George Langelaan short story of the same name. I'm talking about the very Jeff Goldblumy The Fly

"The Fly"

This film will show you parts of Jeff Goldblum that you've never thought you would ever see. Viewer discretion is advised. That being said let's roll on with the trailer!

Not Today, Grandma

Today's Two Buck Tuesday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is 2001 Richard Kelly horror remake of 1951 Jimmy Stewart comedy, Harvey. That's right! I'm talking about Donnie Darko

"Donnie Darko"
While not technically an indie flick it did have a smaller budget than most, and went straight to video. Donnie Darko was one of the first flicks I saw that I actually expanded my mind. I miss seeing flicks with that kind of power. Plus it has Jake Gyllenhaal, a giant rabbit, time travel, and one of my favorite actress crushes, Jena Malone

Check out the trailer. Then hunt down the movie.

Sleep Tight

Today's Monster Monday installment of the Horror Movie October graphic design calendar card series is Wes Craven's 1984 contemporary horror masterpiece about insomnia, A Nightmare on Elm Street

"A Nightmare on Elm Street"

I've never been a big fan of the contemporary monsters of horror, but Freddy Krueger was always a delight, in the worst way possible. It's not so much that he was a killer, but he enjoyed it with a childlike whimsy that made him even moreso demented. Also, this film features Johnny Depp's first theatrical appearance, and on-screen death!

Check out the trailer and then hunt down the film.
